CAA and NRC – Explained

CAA and NRC – Explained

National
The newly amended citizenship act (CAA) has aroused fear among Indian citizens that it will deny citizenship to the existing Muslim minority communities in India. However, if one to dive deep into details of this act then it is clear, that it only aims to provide Indian citizenship to religiously persecuted minorities of our neighboring countries i.e. Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, provided they entered India before December 31, 2014. Since these countries are Islamic state and roughly 95% of their population is Muslim, hence only their minorities had been named in this bill. The passing of the CAB bill raised a lot of questions like - what is CAA, how is it different from NRC, will it be discriminatory against the Muslim Community and will it lead to deportation of the min...

Unsend feature coming soon on WhatsApp; embarrassing texts not going to haunt you any more

Technology
Following in the footsteps of fellow messenger apps like Telegram, WeChat and Viber, WhatsApp is getting closer to rolling out its ‘Delete for everyone’ feature, which lets you wipe out messages you sent by mistake before your contact has had a chance to read them. The company has finally begun testing the functionality on Android and iOS devices, serial WhatsApp leaker WABetaInfo reports. According to the insider, the dedicated recall server is now working and successfully deleting messages. Still, most users still won’t have access to the feature and will likely have to wait until the Facebook-owned messenger eventually enables it remotely for everyone. https://twitter.com/WABetaInfo/status/907406754488700928 What is particularly nifty about this feature is that, according to...

Rajnath said on Article 35A – Centre won’t do anything against sentiments of J&K people

J&K
The Central government will not do anything "against the sentiments" of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said on Monday, amid a raging debate over the fate of Article 35A under which residents of the state get special privileges. He also expressed willingness to meet "anyone who wants to help" in resolving problems of Kashmir, responding to a question as to whether the government is ready to hold talks with the separatists. Singh, who is on a four-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir since September 9, told reporters here that the tree of peace in Kashmir has not dried up and that a permanent solution to Kashmir issue is based on five 'C's -- compassion, communication, coexistence, confidence building and consistency. To a question about legal challenge to ...

No proposal to lower the excise duties on petrol and diesel: Finance Ministry

Economy, National
Consumers will continue to pay higher taxes on petrol and diesel as the government has no plans to lower the excise duty on fuel. This is because notwithstanding the robust collections from the Goods and Services Tax, the Centre continues to remain vigilant about its fiscal health. “There is no proposal to lower the excise duties on petrol and diesel. We are not looking at anything of the sort at the moment,” said a senior government official. While the dividend payment from the Reserve Bank of India at ₹30,659 crore is lower than estimated ₹58,000 crore and uncertainty over the projected ₹72,500 crore from disinvestment receipts, the Centre is keeping a close eye on its fiscal projections. Global prices still low A major source of comfort is the still low prices of crud...

How New Rail Minister Piyush Goyal Can Ensure Safety – & Create Jobs In Indian Railways

Opinion
While the Indian Railways (IR) struggles to retain relevance in tomorrow’s economy, frequent accidents on the railway network have exposed that it is operating under severe stress. This has led to a situation where needs of punctual running can no longer be balanced with need to carry out critical, safety-related maintenance activities, which require stopping of train movement. Most of the maintenance activities need physical stoppage of trains, with the period for this being called a traffic block. The Railways has reached a stage where physical time available is not commensurate with required maintenance in several locations. This is the case on several of the routes. This has led to adoption of expedient processes under duress and a general sense of exasperation. Given that laying o...

New York State Banking Regulator fined Pakistan’s Habib Bank and Kicked out of US

Pakistan, USA
New York’s state banking regulator has slapped a $225m fine on Habib Bank, the biggest bank in Pakistan, and ordered it out of the US after finding a catalogue of flaws in compliance that “opened the door” to the financing of terror. The Department of Financial Services on Thursday said it was taking drastic action — the first time it has ordered a bank to shut down in the US — because Habib had failed to correct serious weaknesses first identified more than a decade ago. By 2015, the DFS found, the bank’s compliance function was in an even worse state, lacking the most basic of controls on money-laundering and customer screening. The DFS’ most recent investigation found that Habib facilitated billions of dollars in transactions with a Saudi private bank, the Al Rajhi Bank, which has h...

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar today said entering politics had not been his wish and he would quit if he found that he was not worthy of staying in politics anymore. He, however, clarified that he was not going to leave the current tenure half way and the state government would complete its term. The chief minister was interacting with an audience during an event organised by a local media group. “Politics is not my family background and hence my entry into it was not as per my wish,” Parrikar, an IIT Bombay graduate, said responding to a question. The Army has finalized a plan to induct women in the military police, a senior officer said today. The plan — being seen as a major step towards breaking gender barriers in the force — is to induct approximately 800 women in military police with a yearly intake of 52 personnel per year, Adjuntant General of the Army Lt. Gen. Ashwani Kumar told reporters. In an interview to PTI in June, Army Chief Gen. Bipin Rawat had said the Army was looking at inducting women jawans and the process would start with the induction of women into military police corps. Lt. Gen. Kumar said the decision to induct women in Corps of Military Police would help in investigating allegations of gender specific crimes. Currently, women are allowed in select areas such as medical, legal, educational, signals and...
