RBI governor Urjit Patel says problem of NPAs was earlier also but it is only recently issue was being recognized. New Delhi: RBI Governor Urjit Patel today attributed the banks grappling with high bad loans to legacy issues saying they are mostly on account of credit facility provided for long-gestation projects before 2011-12. He further said the problem of non-performing assets (NPAs) was earlier also but it is only recently that the issue is being recognized. Patel said that sectors in which bad loans have emerged over the years pertain to long-gestation projects, which were mostly funded before 2011-12. “Therefore, …by definition, this proportionate amount is a legacy issue, although the recognition and reporting of these have taken place only recently,” the RBI Governor s...

Who said you need smartphones to book seats on trains

Opinion
Who said you need smart phones to book seats on trains and buses? All you require is a handkerchief, and the grimier, the better. The other day the train had barely pulled into a station when a large, hairy, male hand plunged in through the window, startling the bespectacled young man huddled in the side seat out of his catnap. It dangled a tiny lady’s handkerchief like a pendulum under his nose. Now fully awake, the chap, showing signs of being a hypochondriac, involuntarily jerked his head away, stopped breathing and watched the grubby hanky anxiously while trying to distance himself from it and the germs it probably carried, but the hanky persisted in pursuing his nose. Alarmed, he withdrew further and further into his seat quite determined to disappear through its back, when the ...

Sunlight, Movement and Heat may soon power your smartphones, wearables

Technology
Sunlight, heat in a room and even movements may soon power your portable and wearable gadgets such as smartphones, thanks to a material identified by scientists that can extract energy from multiple sources at the same time. Researchers from the University of Oulu in Finland have found that a mineral with the perovskite crystal structure has the right properties to extract energy from many forms of energy that surround us and is normally wasted. Perovskites are a family of minerals, many of which have shown promise for harvesting one or two types of energy at a time – but not simultaneously. One member may be good for solar cells, while other my be good at harnessing energy from changes in temperature and pressure.
