Maids, brick makers, children: the faces of slavery in 2016 driving change

Story
CHENNAI, India (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Housemaids, brick makers, labourers, textile workers, fleeing migrants and children risking their lives in mica mines. These were the faces of modern day slavery in 2016 when the world saw a renewed resolve to combat all forms of human bondage. An estimated 45.8 million people globally live in some form of slavery, either trafficked into forced labour, sold for sex, trapped in debt bondage or born into servitude, according to the 2016 Global Slavery Index by rights group Walk Free Foundation. Most of them are workers looking for a livelihood, better jobs, more income. And most of them are cheated, in debt bondage and trafficked to places far from home, campaigners said. The three-stage, solid propellant surface-to-surface missile was test-fired from a mobile launcher from launch complex-4 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at about 1105 hours, DRDO sources said. 5 Things We Missed Out In Modi’s Demonetization Logic…

Opinion
Since the government decided to demonetize the currency of denomination 1000 and 500 on November 08th, there has been a lot of ink spilt on the merits and demerits of the demonetization move. Here are 5 key things we may have missed out in the demonetization logic… 01. The immediate intent was to create a liquidit...

Donald Trump Thanks Indian and Hindus

Donald Trump Thanks Indian and Hindus

International
The event in Florida, which has a sizeable Indian-American population, was attended by a large number of community members. This is for the first time that Trump has acknowledged the contribution of Indian-Americans and Hindus in his historic electoral victory. “Where are they? We have a big group. There they are. I want to thank you. You folks were amazing. They were amazing and voted and they were fantastic,” Trump said, pointing his fingers to the Indian-American community present at the rally. In October, Trump became the first presidential nominee of a major US party to reach out to Indian-Americans, pitching himself to them directly at a rally in Edison, New Jersey. He professed his love for Hindus there, saying, “I love Hindu (in the singular)” and that under his ad...

CIA Says Russia Favored Trump by leaking emails

International
The CIA has concluded in a secret assessment that Russia intervened in the 2016 election to help Donald Trump win the presidency, rather than just to undermine confidence in the U.S. electoral system, according to officials briefed on the matter. Intelligence agencies have identified individuals with connections to the Russian government who provided WikiLeaks with thousands of hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee and others, including Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman, according to U.S. officials. Those officials described the individuals as actors known to the intelligence community and part of a wider Russian operation to boost Trump and hurt Clinton's chances. "It is the assessment of the intelligence community that Russia's goal here was to favor on...
How to take stunning photos using smartphone

How to take stunning photos using smartphone

Technology
Smartphone cameras have seen dramatic improvements, but technology alone won't produce shots that grab attention. That's where the human eye comes in. Here are eight tips to keep in mind when composing that shot, whether of family during the holidays or sights during a vacation. You don't need to own a fancy camera or mess with manual controls. What's the subject? Give people something to latch onto when viewing your photo. As a rule of thumb, close-ups are better. At a party, for instance, avoid wide shots of random people mingling in a room, as the room becomes the subject - and that's boring. Instead, get close-ups of the guest or two who's laughing or singing. The photo is now about people having fun at a party. People mingling can still be part of the shot, but in the backgro...

Triple Talaq violates Fundamental Right: which is why Supreme Court should rule against it

Opinion
On 8 December, the Allahabad High Court used strong words against the practice of triple talaq, describing it as “unconstitutional” and a violation of the rights of Muslim women, but such strong words do not mean anything practically and certainly do not settle the issue in law. More on that later, but first the court's observation should be welcomed because it is significant insofar as it strengthens women's rights movement in the country; sends a strong warning to Islamic clerics that time for them to change is now; denotes a pro-liberty shift in the higher judiciary's thinking, and offers a bright ray of hope to Muslim women who are rendered destitute overnight by triple talaq. The court observed: “The instant divorce (triple talaq) though has been deprecated and not followed by all se...

Why UPI is getting a cold response while Paytm is riding the wave

Technology
Long before demonetization and a scramble to find alternatives to cash, India had laid out a unique tech infrastructure for a digital economy. Its cornerstones were a unique biometrics-based Aadhaar ID for every citizen to enable authentication, and a unified payments interface (UPI) to simplify money transfer. India is on the cusp of leapfrogging. It’s called “India stack.” Tech evangelists helped put it together, and it includes other digital enablers like eSign and a digital locker, all backed by government and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Bill Gates was so impressed with it on a recent visit that he exclaimed: “India is on the cusp of leapfrogging!” But leapfrogging only happens with mass adoption. Although Aadhaar had identified and authenticated a billion Indians, and UPI ...
