National Youth Day is celebrated in India to honour the great soul.

National Youth Day is celebrated in India on January 12 on the birthday of Swami Vivekananda to honour the great mind. The Government of India declared birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda as the National Youth Day in 1984 and since then the day is celebrated in India every year. The Government of India then said, “It was felt that the philosophy of Swamiji and the ideals for which he lived and worked could be a great source of inspiration for the Indian Youth.”

The day is celebrated in the country with huge pomp and fervor. It is celebrated in schools and colleges across the country with speeches, music, seminars, presentations and competitions. Swami Vivekenada has inspired millions of youth during his era and continue to do so. His teachings have had far and wife effects on lives of people.

He has transformed lives deriving their inspiration from Indian spiritual tradition and mainly from Sri Ramakrishna Paramahans. Swami Vivekanda’s lectures derived the teachings of his Master Sri Ramakrishna have motivated numerous youths and organisation. All his teachings have been complied into The Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda.

Mission Bhartiyam organises a two-day event in Uttar Pradesh in India named Basti Yuvo Mahotsav for youths to mark the day. Various activities including education, art and cultural programmes are conducted there.

To spread the message of Vedanta as the world’s most ancient religious philosophy, the Vedanta Society of Toronto in Canada also celebrates birth anniversary of Vivekananda. Swami Vivekananda founded the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission. He is known for his speech in 1893 which began, “Sisters and brothers of America …” because of which he is known as ‘Messenger of Indian wisdom to the Western world’. He is believed to have introduced Hinduism at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago with his speech.
