The Supreme Court has dismissed a plea of jailed AIADMK leader V K Sasikala seeking review of its verdict convicting and sentencing her to a four-year jail term in a disproportionate assets case. The apex court also rejected her plea for an open court hearing of the review petitions. “We do not find any error in the common judgment impugned, much less an apparent error on the face of the record, so as to call for its review. The review petitions are, accordingly, dismissed,” a bench of Justices S A Bobde and Amitava Roy. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has entered into strategic alliances with Ola and Uber that will provide passengers the option to hire these cabs at select aerodromes. As part of this strategic alliance, both Ola and Uber will fulfil commuting demand of passengers at the AAI-run Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Lucknow and Bhubaneswar airports, a release said today. “This alliance with Ola and Uber shall also facilitate air passengers to book a cab through the booking kiosks located at the airport itself. This will reduce the hassle of waiting or moving out for such app-based cabs,” the AAI said in the release. In a major relief for Muslim women, the Supreme Court on Tuesday held triple talaq as “unconstitutional”, “arbitrary” and “not part of Islam”. The five-judge bench of Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar, Justice Kurian Joseph, Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit and Justice S Abdul Nazeer by a 3:2 majority judgement said there is no constitutional protection for triple talaq. Justices Joseph, Nariman and UU Lalit held that triple talaq is not integral to Islam, is banned in law and lacks approval of the Shariat. However, Chief Justice Khehar and Justice Nazir, in a minority judgment, said triple talaq is integral to Islamic practices and enjoys constitutional protection. The Central government has given the go-ahead for an annual action plan of Rs 109.29 crore under Haryana State Horticulture Mission for 2017-18 fiscal, including state share and spillover activities. “Besides, the Haryana government has approved Rs 6.95 crore as 15 per cent extra state share for the release of assistance to the beneficiaries of protected structures,” Principal Secretary, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department, Abhilaksh Likhi, said on Saturday. The Kerala High Court today held that no license is required to serve liquor in a private function held at an individual’s residence. A bench of justices Antony Dominic and Dama Seshadri Naidu gave its ruling on a plea by one Alex V Chacko fearing harassment by police and excise department authorities in a baptism function in which he is planning to serve liquor to the guests. In his petition, Chacko recalled that he had to obtain a license from the Excise Department after paying Rs 50,000 for serving liquor at the betrothal ceremony of his daughter. He said he and his family members possess only permissible amount of liquor.   An international airport with a capacity to handle 30-50 million passengers per year will come up at Jewar in Greater Noida in the next five to six years to ease the load on the Delhi airport, the government announced today. “In-principle clearance has been granted” for the greenfield airport at Jewar, civil aviation minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju said at a press briefing in New Delhi. The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority has notified 3,000 hectares of land in Jewar for a “world- class” international airport, Raju added. Of the total land, 1,000 hectares will be acquired under the first phase of airport development, which will cost Rs 2,000 crore.
