Learn why CBI raided NDTV’s Prannoy, Radhika Roy

National
The raid by the CBI on different premises of Radhika Roy and Prannoy Roy, the promoters of NDTV Group on Monday morning, has its roots in a series of loans the Roys took starting in 2008 because they wanted to buy back a large chunk of NDTV’s shares from the market. After the Roys bought a 7.73% shares of NDTV from General Atlantic in December 2007, an open offer to other minority shareholders automatically kicked in. To fund buying the shares minority shareholders wanted to sell the Roys created a company named RRPR Holdings Private Limited — named after Radhika and Prannoy Roy. RRPR borrowed Rs 501 crore from Indiabulls. Along with RRPR Holdings and their individual shares, the three promoters controlled majority of NDTV’s equity. To cover part of Indiabulls’ loan, RRPR borrowed Rs 37...

SRIHARIKOTA: Indian Space Research Organisation on Monday successfully launched its most powerful rocket, GSLV Mk III nicknamed 'Fatboy'+ , by firing a high thrust indigenous cryogenic engine in the first developmental flight and placed the country's heaviest satellite in orbit. With the launch, Isro has demonstrated its mastery in developing a cryogenic engine, a technology denied to it years ago. The launch proves the homegrown launch vehicle's capability of hurling up to four tonne payload into higher orbits. It has also laid a strong foundation for its ambitious future projects, including Chandraayan-II and a manned mission, besides venturing into the global heavy payload market. IT layoff numbers are overstated: Top TCS executive

National
As the IT industry battles allegations of mass layoffs, Ravi Viswanathan, president (growth markets), TCS, says the numbers are exaggerated. "Somebody has to take a closer look at the numbers. Most companies have said there are no layoffs but performance-related send-offs. Layoff means there is no work and such a company would not hire more. This industry has no concept of layoff, especially at this time," he said. While several leading IT companies including Cognizant, Wipro and Tech Mahindra have been accused of layoffs, Mumbai-headquartered TCS is among the few that has not been at the receiving end of IT unions and disgruntled employees. Defending the industry as a whole, Viswanathan said that early estimates from Nasscom indicate that the IT industry will be net hirers as the year ...

Adult content views on smartphones up by 75% as data rates drop in India

National, Technology
Over the past two decades, the adult industry has often been credited globally with the mainstreaming of innovations in consumer technology, such as video formats, Web searches, and discreet chat rooms. The latest in that swelling list appears to be mobile data: Porn-viewing on the hand-phone seems to have surged as data costs plunged in India’s telecom industry. The viewing of adult content soared 75% since data rates came crashing down in the second half of last fiscal year under severe competitive pressure, according to video viewership tracker Vidooly’s findings, available exclusively with ET. New entrant Reliance Jio’s aggressive pricing forced incumbents Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, and Idea Cellular to sharply cut data rates, even as porn viewing surged - primarily in the tier 2 and ...

National, Technology, USA
Tesla founder Elon Musk hailed India’s aim to move to an all-electric fleet by 2030, on a day when President Donald Trump said the US will withdraw from the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Tesla enthusiasts in India may indeed have much to look forward in the coming days, as Musk responded positively to a tweet from Anand Mahindra, who prodded him to bring his electric cars to this country. Musk welcoming India’s move comes close on the heels of the Canadian-American businessman announcing his resignation from all three positions on the Presidential Councils, over Trump’s decision to exit the Paris Climate Agreement. “Climate change is real. Leaving Paris is not good for America or the world,” Musk tweeted, not hiding his dismay at the move. While he was upset with the US President, ...

RGI urges states to safeguard Aadhaar data collected for National Population Register exercise

National
After Information and Technology (IT) Ministry, the Union Home Ministry has also woken up to the challenge of avoiding leakage of Aadhaar details, realising it too had recorded the Aadhaar numbers of people during National Population Register (NPR) exercise. Registrar General of India (RGI) has recently written to all states that the Aadhaar details collected during the NPR exercise also need to be safeguarded – which may well be a logistical nightmare given such details exist in form of paper documents at the level of not just state departments but also district and even sub-district levels. All this data was to be used for issuing Resident Identity Cards to all above 18 years – a project to which Cabinet is still to give its approval. Leakage of Aadhaar details of people and the uniqu...

ISRO in news over heavy-lift rocket launch on June 5

National
An anxious Indian space establishment is keeping its fingers crossed over the launch of its new and most powerful rocket on June 5. On that evening, the indigenous GSLV-Mark III makes a bid to breach a heavy-lift rocket club that can put four-tonne satellites into space. The U.S., Russia, Europe, China and Japan are already there. The first development vehicle, called GSLV-MkIII D-1, is slated to fly from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota at 5.28 p.m., says the Indian Space Research Organisation. The success of the first full flight of Mk III will mean that soon, Indian communication satellites can be lofted into space from within the country. It will also improve ISRO’s ability to reach heavier satellites to both — the higher geostationary transfer orbit or GTO of 36,000 km...
