Gauri Lankesh Murder: No One Safe Under Congress Rule in Karnataka

Gauri Lankesh Murder: No One Safe Under Congress Rule in Karnataka

Karnataka
The appalling murder of Gauri Lankesh, a feisty journalist known for her strident views, has sent online and offline circles into a shock. Many in Karnataka, especially in Bengaluru, were still grappling with the feeling of pervasive peril. This sinking feeling is, if a high-profile journalist could be killed with such impunity, then the state of the common people could be far worse. Apart from the high-profile M M Kalburgi case, a number of suspicious deaths and possibly political murders have happened in Karnataka in the last few years. They convey a startling pattern of deteriorating situation in Karnataka with the state government seeming indifferent at best. In a notable case, Deputy Superintendent of Police M K Ganapathy was found dead in a lodge, reportedly committing suicide, j...

Parrikar wins Panaji, Vishwajit Rane wins Valpoi in Goa Bypoll for BJP

Goa
Panaji: Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has won the Panaji Assembly by-election, defeating his nearest rival, Girish Chodankar of the Congress, by 4,803 votes. Parrikar got 9,862 votes against 5,059 by Chodankar. Goa Suraksha Manch president Anand Shirodkar got only 220 votes, while 301 people opted ‘None of The Above’ or NOTA. By-elections were held in Goa on August 23. Manohar Parrikar was sworn in as Goa Chief Minister in March 2017 after the BJP formed a coalition government with Goa Forward Party, Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) and independents. Goa Suraksha Manch (GSM) president Anand Shirodkar polled 220 votes, while 301 people pressed None of The Above (NOTA) button in the August 23 election. Chodankar, a senior leader of the Goa Congress, is a close aide of party...

‘What goes around comes around,’ says Robert Vadra takes a jab on Arvind Kejriwal

Delhi
Long before the India Against Corruption spawned the Aam Aadmi Party, Robert Vadra, the son-in-law of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, has been a dartboard for the anti-corruption movement's chief strategist Arvind Kejriwal. The "strange obsession", as the businessman described the frequent attacks on him, continued well after Mr Kejriwal became Delhi's Chief Minister. As Mr Kejriwal battles corruption charges levelled by sacked Delhi minister Kapil Mishra, Mr Vadra weighed in. "What goes around comes around," he said in a Facebook post that noted how people who had hurled "false accusations" at him were facing a "similar plight". "That too from an insider who claims to have substantial proof," he said, reacting to Mr Mishra's allegation that he had seen the Chief Minister take 2 crore...

Adityanath will make UP Uttam Pradesh, says BJP

Uttar Pradesh
The choice of Adityanath as the next chief minister of Uttar Pradesh has drawn criticism from the opposition parties even as the BJP stood strongly behind its leader. The opposition parties hit out at Adityanath's image of Hindutva hardliner, with Congress leader Veerappa Moily calling his elevation as the "biggest assault" on secularism. "It is a big assault on secularism in the country. Maybe, the BJP or RSS would like to endorse their cause of Hinduism. India is not Hinduism. Hinduism is not India. "India is built above castes and religions and 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (the world is one family) is the very foundation of our secular society. It is the biggest assault ever done on secularism," Moily said. The BJP leaders strongly defended Adityanath and said he will take the s...
Only BJP can bring stability to Goa, no MLA wanted to support Congress, said CM Manohar Parrikar

Only BJP can bring stability to Goa, no MLA wanted to support Congress, said CM Manohar Parrikar

Goa
After being sworn in as the Goa Chief Minister for a fourth term on Tuesday, Manohar Parrikar said that the BJP alone, not the Congress, could bring stability to the state and rubbished the Congress' charge that the BJP's coming to power was immoral. He now has to take the trust vote on Thursday (March 16) to prove he has the support of the majority to run the government. Speaking to India Today, Parrikar while conceding that the mandate given by the electorate was fractured went on to add in the same vein that the BJP had a higher percentage of votes. BJP won 13 seats as opposed to Congress' 17 in the 40-member Goa assembly, but managed to win over support from small regional parties to get to the required mark. COMING TO GOA A MATTER OF COMPULSION: PARRIKAR The BJP leader said tha...

With JDU-RJD on warpath post UP results, BJP says Nitish Kumar won’t complete his tenure as CM

Bihar
With JDU-RJD on warpath post UP verdict, BJP says Nitish Kumar won't complete his tenure as Bihar chief minister. With the ruling JDU-RJD alliance in Bihar on warpath post the Uttar Pradesh election verdict, the BJP has predicted that Nitish Kumar won't be able to complete his full term as chief minister. "The grand alliance is divided after the BJP's landslide victory in Uttar Pradesh and it looks impossible for Nitish Kumar to complete his term," said Sushil Modi, senior BJP leader. Interestingly, post the Uttar Pradesh election results, RJD leader Raghuvansh Prasad Singh has been going all out hitting out at Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for reasoning opposition of demonetisation as the cause of defeat of Congress-Samajwadi party alliance. On Tuesday, Singh once again made a blister...

Saffron Holi: BJP is MODIfied with historic majority in UP, sweeps Uttarakhand

Uttar Pradesh
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) vanquished all Opposition by clearly winning two and coming within striking distance in two more of the five state Assembly elections, the results of which were declared on Saturday. The victory will result in consolidation of power for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party president Amit Shah. A reshuffle in the central government and in the party hierarchy is likely. Praising Modi, Shah said, “The only factor for the win is the performance of the Modi government. ... Even his political rivals will have to admit that he has emerged as the tallest leader in the country since Independence.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not make a public appearance, but tweeted: “Am overjoyed that BJP has received unprecedented support from all sections of soci...
Manipur cliffhanger: Advantage BJP despite Congress emerging as single largest party

Manipur cliffhanger: Advantage BJP despite Congress emerging as single largest party

Manipur
Despite coming out as the single largest party in Manipur, the odds are stacked heavily against the incumbent Congress in the state. With 28 seats, it is three short of the magic figure to get a simple majority. The BJP, which has been the biggest gainer (the party could not open its account in 2012 assembly polls) in these election has won 21. But what gives them a clear advantage is the fact that like-minded parties on whom it is depending for support to form its maiden government in Manipur have done well too. Another factor that could weigh in its favour is the fact that it is in power at the Centre. Regional Naga Peoples Front (NPF) which is a constituent of the North East Democratic Alliance or NEDA (the north-east offshoot of the NDA) has won 4 seats. Conrad Sagma's National Pe...

UP election results 2017: Move over exit polls, Artificial Intelligence gives Modi’s BJP 220 seats

Uttar Pradesh
An internet data analysis says the BJP could get between 220-222 seats and about 35 per cent vote share in Uttar Pradesh. An artificial intelligence analysis of internet engagements across parties shows the Bharatiya Janata Party is far ahead in its online push and this could translate into 220-222 seats for the party in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly election, the results for which will be announced tomorrow. Perhaps for the first time in India's history, the country has a prime minister who responds rather readily to tweets, in fact he once presented a scarf to someone who praised it on Twitter and frequently shares stories of his travels on social media. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's love and belief in the power of technology is all too well known. The Bharatiya Janata Party was the f...

Priyanka seeking votes for murder and rape accused is unfortunate: BJP

Uttar Pradesh
The BJP today targeted Priyanka Gandhi Vadra over her poll campaign in Rae Bareli for the Congress-SP alliance, saying it was unfortunate that she was seeking votes for those accused of “rape and murder”. BJP national secretary Shrikant Sharma referred to the rape charge against Gayatri Prajapati, a minister in the Akhilesh Yadav-led SP government in Uttar Pradesh who is contesting the ongoing state Assembly polls from Amethi, and the murder charge against another SP nominee Arun Verma, to target Priyanka. Amethi is a Gandhi family pocket borough and is represented by Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi in Lok Sabha, while neighbouring Rae Bareli is represented by party chief and Rahul’s mother Sonia Gandhi in the Lower House of Parliament.”It is unfortunate that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra ...
